Celebrating the end of one hot long summer, Umdum.com is currently running an August Promotion where you can get half off of our Editorial Review fee.
Submit one site to Umdum.com and get your second editorial review for free. That’s right, it’s a buy one, get one free deal from the Umdum Directory and Search Engine Journal which will last until August 30th, 2006.
Here’s how it works; submit one site to Umdum and get the second submission for free.
How do you get your second free listing?
Simply go through the motions with your second submission like you’d normally pay for the editorial review, but back out of the payment page once you complete the submittal process.
Then, post your two URLs in the comments here and our team will review and approve your quality sites… it’s that easy.
Thanks, Loren

Today, July 4th 2006, marks the 11th week of the modern existence of the Umdum web directory. To date, the directory’s popularity is beginning to build with hundreds of sites listed and widespread acceptance of the site by the web marketing community.
A sound and news filled launch, some advertising, and being in the right place at the right time has helped to build the directory as a fledgeling resource in the online world.
Already, sites which have listed themselves in Umdum are beginning to notice higher referral traffic than some of the other major directories & search engines on the market. Goes to show that the true value of a directory is that people are actually using it, and it’s not a menu of good food, sitting on a dusty table in an empty roadside Diner.
Why are people using Umdum? My best guess is that they are finding it.
Doing a quick backlinks search on Yahoo, I’m amazed to see that 287,000 links to Umdum have been found on the web… and the majority of those links are from a well diverse group of authority sites and blogs – mostly centered around search or online marketing in some capacity.
Either sites like the name, the design, or like me… and that’s a golden trifecta of authority building.
I believe that this unsolicited testimonial from “Travel Rants” speaks for itself :
“Is anyone else noticing that umdum.com is providing more referrals than all of the other directories your listed in added together?
I’m seeing good results from this directory. My faith in directories MIGHT be coming back.”
As a directory owner and operator, that’s exactly what I want to hear from site owners who have listed their properties in the Umdum index. Thank you!
Speaking of usage, we’re now enjoying an Alexa Traffic Ranking of 42,108… that’s almost double of our May 4th ranking of 84,204. Incredible!
Expect more from Umdum over the next Quarter, and some BIG announcements later in the year.
Thanks, Loren

Alexa has just updated their Traffic Rank numbers and I’m proud to announce that only after 3 weeks of launching, Umdum has broken the 100,000 barrier and is ranked by Alexa as 84,204
After a nice peak in traffic following our launch announcement, Umdum is now averaging around 25,000 over the past week. Alexa’s rankings are based upon a 3 month average, so we juped from 400,000 to 84,204 fairly quickly. I’m expecting, given the graph below, for us to hit an Alexa Traffic Rank of 30,000 next month.
Thanks to everyone for your support. We are continuing to grow the directory

Classifying the Internet via the targeted niche showcasing of sites in the form of a directory is no new idea.
Best of the Web and DMOZ have been at it for over a decade and the former has done a rather wonderful job of giving definition to the quality of the sites out there in cyberspace.
Directories are possibly the most simple form of citing the worthy sites in the clutter of the World Wide Web. As a whole, search engine technologies, whether they be as broad as Google or as niche as Local.com, put an emphasis on trusted directories and the human process of editorial.
With all of the respect that an algorithm has over determining the quality of a site based upon its content, anchor text, links and other web citations, directories add the subjective opinion of living breathing experts to the equation – something that I believe cannot be simulated by an algorithm and is the base foundation of the definition of quality.
Questions which come into my mind when reviewing a site for inclusion into a category include:
What quality does this site bring to the end user?
Does this site deserve to be listed and defined by this directory submission?
Will the user find not only the information that they are looking for, but where to find more, purchase a product, or contact the publisher of that information?
Does the phone number on the site lead to an informed and qualified person on the other end of the telephone, or just another machine?
Is that address the correct address of the store which can be accessed via a mapping program and entered with the step of a foot, or is it the address of a PO Box or Mailboxes Etc.?
Are web users bookmarking this site?
While the answers to these questions may not be the final deciding point on whether a site gets listed in Umdum or not, they are all measurements of human driven quality.
Umdum’s mission is to provide a clean and transparent human driven web directory which will list quality sites in their most pinpoint and site specific directory category.
In layman’s terms, we’re going to try to build the best and most worthy directory of sites available – with no crap and no link spam, doorway page, or made-for-AdSense end results.
We feel that in the spirit of BOTW, RubberStamped, and Yahoo that Umdum will become a positive, trusted and valued directory for the search engine community.
If you feel good about your business, service, or association please submit to Umdum; we are an open and inclusive group of editors. If you’re having second or third thoughts on whether or not your site will make the cut, please review our Directory Guidelines.
Best, Loren Baker
